How to Replace Window Panes

You can do it yourself for a fraction of what it would cost to hire an expert. You'll only require the right tools and a few minutes of your time.

Putty

A hurled baseball, an errant rock or a falling branch can cause a window to break or crack. Most windows can be repaired easily by putting in a new piece. The glass is held in place using small clips made of metal called the glazier's pointed and putty, often called glazing compound. Remove the old pane and clean the area with a rag, a scraper that is a pull type or a wood chisel. Wear safety glasses and gloves when working. If the window is glued to the frame, you'll have to employ a heat gun in order to soften the adhesive prior to prying it free.

If you're planning to reinstall the original sash, take off the mold that holds the old pane. Sand the sash until it is flat and ready to receive new caulk. Paint after the putty has dried completely. It will not form a good seal and could be leaking or discoloring over time.

Paint

You might be worried about replacing a broken pane of glass. It's true that replacing a single piece of glass doesn't have to be costly when you do it on your own. Even double-paned windows can be replaced for a fraction of what it costs for a professional.

If you are working with a large glass window, first make sure it is securely attached to the frame. With the right tools and techniques, you can make this task relatively easy and quick.

When you are ready to begin taking down the old window pane. Take out the glazing points made of metal that are attached to it. These are small metal triangles which act as "nails" to hold the window in place. They are submerged beneath a layer of glazing putty, which hardens into a solid, formed wedge that holds the window firmly in place and hides the points.
